NURIT SIEGAL
Writer & Artist in Chicago
Since October 7th, Jewish communities around the world have been shocked by society’s response to the Hamas massacre in Israel. Many are wondering how so many academics, politicians and activists can continue to defend, and even celebrate, Hamas?
With over fifteen years of research experience and a Master’s degree in Political Theory, my work traces how violence against Jews in the modern era evolved from campaigns justified in the name of God and divine punishment, to campaigns justified in the name of humanity and national liberation.
Despite the immense challenges we face, the history behind modern antisemitism also offers us insight into the many facets and expressions of Jewish resilience. JEWISH FINE ART
As an artist, my pieces are inspired by religious Jewish life and identity, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th century. My work “imposes” a modern aesthetic onto the artwork and the deep appreciation for tradition on which it was built, thus illustrating the inability of the Jewish spirit to ever be rendered obsolete, regardless of its outer trappings. It has survived, and even thrived, in ages, regions, and societies which anticipated a demise that never came.
The question of how to authentically portray and honor this ancient people and religion in the modern era - and even rescue it from the “gaze” of and depiction by Judaism’s harshest modern opponents - is another common theme throughout my work.
